Marcus King Band and Penelope Road @ Terminal B, Buffalo, NY 6-15-26

The Marcus King Band graced the stage at Terminal B on Tuesday night. The show was scheduled for Monday but due to torrential rainstorms, the show was moved to Tuesday night. Atlanta, Georgia’s own Penelope Road opened the show.

Penelope Road took to the stage at 7pm sharp. The 5-piece band plays a blend of 70’s rock, soul, funk and R&B dished out a 9-song set that lasted about 40 minutes. Bot keyboardist Charles Eastman and guitarist Max Moore share lead vocal duties. “Feel it Coming My Way,” “Smile Again” and a cover of Sheep by Mt. Joy were highlights.  I believe this was the 1st trip the band has made to the area and thought they got a good crowd reaction.

Headlining the show was the Marcus King band. The first time I saw the band was when they opened up for Chris Stapleton at Darien Lake PAC back in 2024. I was very impressed by the young blues/Americana guitarist and was eager to see him again. Well, I had no idea when I attended the Kennedy Center Honors in December 2025, that he was one of the guests that paid tribute to my favorite band KISS. He performed solo and did a stirring rendition of “Beth.” Well, when the Terminal B schedule was announced, I was excited to see that King was one of the first acts of the season to perform. Last year, the Marcus King Band released their first record under that moniker called ‘Darling Lue.’ This King’s set opened up with a cover of the Grand Funk song “Sin’s a Good Man’s Brother.” King and other guitarist Drew Smithers constantly played off each other throughout the 1hour and 50-minute set. With King’s graspy voice and also being able to deliver some tasty licks he truly brings a different element to the blues /American scene. While King and Smithers led their way with their six-string assault, the rhythm section held down the fort the entire night. Some of the highlights from King’s set were “Carolina Honey” and “Honky Tonk Hell” They brought out Penelope Road for an interesting rendition of “Night Moves” by the Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. Maybe an appropriate song as one of the lyrics states “Blame it on the Thunder.” A perfectly paced anecdote from the shows postponement from the previous day.

All in all, King and his bandmates truly wear their southern roots on their sleeve. Their songs are delivered that way with a hint of southern hospitality. I’m hoping it isn’t long before the band makes a return appearance to the WNY area.
