Blake Shelton and The Band Perry @ Darien Lake Performing Arts Center, Darien, NY 8-2-14

Blake Shelton and The Band Perry have teamed up for one of this summer’s hottest county music packages. The Band Perry was just in town headlining UB’s Springfest back in May ( Review) so we won’t go into much detail about their set as it didn’t change much. It was nice to see an opening act use the extended stage (thrust) as The Band Perry did, especially their lead vocalist, Kimberly Perry, who took full advantage of the added room to roam. Their set list was shorter than the previous show as well (11 songs) due to opening up for Shelton.

Shelton took the stage around 9:05pm and went into “All About Tonight.” He used the thrust for this song but didn’t for the next two songs he performed. In fact, Shelton didn’t use it a whole lot and when he did, he didn’t stay out there too long. Shelton went from performing with an acoustic to singing acpaella all night. He talked about his lack of caring when he tweets and said if he offends anyone they can “Kiss My Country Ass.” A perfect segue into that particular song I might add! Shelton played to the crowd asking if there were any fans that have been with him since the beginning. After a overzealous response, he proceeded to put a country hat on with a mullet attached to it and played “Some Beach.” Shelton, who appears on the TV show “The Voice,” brought a former contestant from the show up onto the stage, a woman named Gwen Sebastian, to sing with him on “My Eyes.”

He dug deep in his catalog as he played his first hit ever recorded in “Austin” off of his self titled debut album. He is getting ready to release his 11th studio effort titled “Bringing Back the Sunshine” on September 30, 2014. Unfortunately, nothing was played from it and no singles have been released up until this point. It would have been cool to get a taste of what will be coming but everything is under wraps for now.

Shelton, for the most part, gave the fans what they wanted, a good ole’ fashioned country show. Shelton, notorious for being a little brash and outspoken is often misconstrued or taken the wrong way. However, the few jokes and candid humor he threw in made for a fun time and wonderful night of music and laughter.
