Micky Dolenz is currently out on tour which is being dubbed “60 years of The Monkees.” Dolenz, who is last surviving member of the Monkees, brought his band to a sold-out performance at the West Herr Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda, NY last Saturday night. There was much anticipation that built up since October of 2025, when the tour was officially announced. There were a lot of people wearing shirts, jackets, and hats depicting the Monkees name all over the venue.
Dolenz’ band took to the stage at 7:30pm sharp. They did two sets with a 20-minute intermission. Most of the tracks played were songs from the Monkees catalog with a few covers and originals scattered in. To open the show, the band played the “Theme to the Monkees” and then Micky Dolenz joined them to sing his big hit “Last Train to Clarkston.” Micky Dolenz voice was still very strong and led a great rendition of the tune. Drummer Rich Dart showed his talent as he went from behind the kit to the forefront to sing “Your Aunt Grizelda.” Mickey’s sister Coco Dolenz was a co-vocalist and sang lead on few tracks too. She sang “Shades of Gray” and both Dolenz’ came together to sing “Me & Magdalena,” which was one of the highlights of the entire show. What made this show very special is Dolenz’s connection he made with the audience throughout the performance. His storytelling is second to none, The Monkees had Jimi Hendrix open up for them on their first tour. He talked about how that came about and how it ended. He also talked about how he was invited by Paul McCartney to sit in on a portion of the recording of The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s album. The love he shared of his former bandmates (Peter Tork, Richard Nesmith and Davy Jones) was very endearing. He talked about each one and how they each brought something different to the table. Old Monkees TV clips were shown throughout the show too. This show was truly a 60-year celebration of the band and what they accomplished.
Every Monkees fan who attended the show should have come away happy. Micky Dolenz and his band delivered a very entertaining show. It was my first time ever seeing any of the Monkees perform live in concert and to me, it was perfect way to pay tribute to 60 years of The Monkees!
