Derek St. Holmes Band @ Quaker Steak & Lube, Lancaster, New York 5-21-15

Currently on break from the Ted Nugent band along with working on new material for the soon to be reformed Whitford – St. Holmes project, guitarist Derek St. Holmes performed in the WNY region at Quaker Steak @ Lube in Lancaster, NY for the third edition of their weekly bike night. Accompanying St. Holmes were Michael Hund and his son Dylan (on guitar and bass respectively) and The Headstones drummer Dale Harrison. This group has played with St. Holmes on multiple occasions.

You can see how comfortable they are as a band when they opened the show with what any other band would call it’s closers, “Cat Scratch Fever” and “Stranglehold.” St. Holmes, who has one of the most underrated voices in rock history, sounded in classic form. The sound wasn’t the most ideal, but the band didn’t let that deter them from putting on what will be the best show of the year for it’s bike night.

Holmes not only dished out classics like “Hey Baby” and one of my favorites “Stormtroopin” but also gave the crowd a good dose of his original material. He also performed a few new songs from his latest solo offering titled “Derek St. Holmes” which were “Sheila” and “In Too Deep.”

I refer to the Hunds as our Buffalo version of Eddie and Wolfgang Van Halen. Michael Hund has accumulated the highest honor in Buffalo by being inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame. His guitar playing compliments St. Holmes perfectly. Hund has played with St. Holmes on a variety of occasions throughout the country. Both the younger Hund and Harrison performed a solid rhythm section.

It is always a treat to see Derek St. Holmes play the Buffalo area and this show was no exception.
