Lights ‘Little Machines’

Lights still has it, and has successfully pulled through what she calls the worst writers block that she’s ever experienced. After experimenting with production more than songwriting in Siberia, she felt very uninspired. From being signed to a deal at 15, she felt that she had nothing else to say and feared she may have lost it by her mid 20s. Lights had turned to other female artist’s biographies to find where their inspiration came from, dabbled in painting and poetry and finally had let herself enjoy music again and successfully churned out Little Machines. Little Machines is a synth pop album that balances modern sounds with a retro feel and is layered with Lights’ shimmering poetic vocals. Over the years and throughout her albums, Lights maintains her sweet feather-like voice and yet at the same time can belt it out like there’s no tomorrow.

The powerhouse “Up We Go” was released in July to be the lead single for the album. It may be the song that finally garners the attention that she so deserves. Lights’ poetry had been the structure of the entire album, saying that she was more focused on lyrics and melodies as opposed to production on this album. She wanted to be able to strip down the songs and sing them with an acoustic guitar and have them still achieve the same effect. After watching a few live performances in this fashion, I can say she achieved her goal. Little Machines is a mixture of Lights’ entire life, from her early beginnings and to the new chapters of her life.
