Weezer (103.3 Edgefest) @ Buffalo Outer Harbor, Buffalo, New York 8-10-14

Weezer headlined the 2014 103.3 Rock Radio’s Edgestfest this past Sunday night. The band is gearing up for its 9th studio effort titled “Everything Will Be Alright.” Before the band appeared there were a slew of guests including many young kids on the side of the stage. I took this to mean it may be a homecoming for someone and that was the case for drummer Patrick Wilson.

The band appropriately opened with the Wilson co-written “My Name is Jonas.” Unfortunately a few technical difficulties kept greeting the band throughout the first few tracks of their set. They did get the ball rolling midway through “Hash Pipe.” Rivers Cuomo led the band through a solid hour and a half set that consisted of classic Weezer songs like “Beverly Hills” and “Say it Ain’t So.” Brian Bell’s guitar playing was spot on throughout, especially on songs like “Surf Wax America” and “Pork and Beans.” At times Cuomo left his comfort zone from behind the mic stand to venture out with mic in hand to get the crowd more energized.

Weezer gave the fans a glimpse of what can be expected when they played the new single, “Back to the Shack.” A catchy, melodic and quirky track as what is expected from a band like Weezer. Cuomo really appreciated the fans response and was gracious and thankful after they played it. Cuomo and Wilson showed their versatility by switching instruments for “Photograph.”

Weezer showed why they are still a formidable headliner as the fans who came to see just them (myself included) were treated to a solid rock show!
