The multi-talented Sheila E. enjoyed a stop at Canalside in Buffalo, NY in support of her first album in 12 years entitled “ICON.” Coming out on stage with drum sticks in hand she tossed a few into the audience. Taking hold of her percussion set in front of the stage, she immediately went to work as the band played “Sambia Funk.” During “Leader of the Band,” she made her way to her drum kit to display her prowess there.
Besides going back and forth between her percussion and her drum kit, Sheila E. also played the bass on “Lovely Day” and guitar on “Rockstar.” Many of you may remember her time with Prince and that short stint was represented with the song “Erotic City.” Sheila E. also got a proclamation from the Mayor of Buffalo proclaiming it to be Sheila E. day during her set. She received a basket of gifts associated with the city along with her declaration. She was taken aback and held back tears of joy and thanked her fans for being there all of these years. She did pay them back in a small way by going into the audience and signing for anyone who purchased her new CD ICON in the midst of her set.
She came out and did and encore that included her biggest hit “Glamorous Life.” After she gave her percussion set a good pounding, she kicked and tossed her cymbals into the air to signify the end of the show.
Sheila E. has been in the business for over 40 years but it was her landmark album back in 1984, titled “The Glamorous Life,” that put her on the map. Fast forward 30 years and looking around at the audience you can tell that the fans love for her has not dwindled one bit.
