Kiefer Sutherland’s debut album “Down in a Hole” has all the fixins of a classic country music album, complete with downtrodden lyrics of heart ache, whiskey, death-row and, of course, loneliness, all highlighted by Sutherland’s deep and gritty voice.
Yes, it’s that Kiefer Sutherland. The actor who has won an Emmy, a Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Awards and is probably best known as agent Jack Bauer from the hit TV series “24.” As down and dirty as he gets as an actor is the grit this album is made of. The first song, “Can’t Stay Away” has harmonious background vocals and wailing guitar riffs that are present throughout this offering. Sutherland sings with emotion and soul. “Not Enough Whiskey” showcases the pedal steel guitar and its sing-a-long-ability makes for a country version of a power ballad. The entire album gives the perspective of a “lived in” feeling. The title track is actually the most upbeat tune on CD. “Shirley Jane” reflects a letter written by a death-row inmate on his last night alive. Just when you think it can’t get any more tear-jerking, the album closes with “Gonna Die.”
Instrumentally, this album is beautiful. It’s well-crafted from start to finish and Sutherland’s lyrics are filled with emotion. His gravelly voice, deep in the mire of heartbreak, exudes his pain in a very realistic manner. If you like traditional country music and Americana soul, this album is for you. If you’re miserable and looking for company, you can definitely commiserate with Sutherland. Open a bottle of whiskey and sip some as you listen. Before long, you’ll be thinking Kiefer Sutherland is right there with you. If you prefer to think happy thoughts, steer clear of “Down in a Hole” before you end up in one that’s six feet deep.
