Tedeschi Trucks Band @ Canalside, Buffalo, New York 6-21-14

In 2010, after already being married for a few years, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks decided to unite their talents and go out on the road. This is their first appearance together in the WNY area since a UB Center for the Arts gig in Amherst, NY in October of 2011. Still touring in support of the August 2013 release of “Made Up Mind,” the Tedeschi Trucks Band were locked and loaded right from the get go.

The band really relied on playing the material off of “Made up Mind” and it came across wonderfully. The beauty of playing music in any band is appreciating how talented each individual member of the band is and you won’t find a better slide bar player than Derek. Tedeschi and Trucks let the entire band do the talking as others showcased what they were all about. Kebbi Williams let loose on the sax during “Don’t Miss Me.” “More & More” was led on vocals by both Mike Mattison and Mark Rivers. Tedeschi and Trucks shared a moment in the limelight during a stripped down portion of the set, where most of the band left stage to just them, the bassist and the drummer, to perform the Elmore James cover “Sky is Crying.” They each did a solo within the song. Tedeschi is an amazing guitarist in her own right and in most bands she would be top dog. With her husband slinging the axe, it’s hard for anyone to match up. If you want to see what I mean, take the last song before the encore, the Derek and the Dominoes cover “Keep on Growing,” for example; how Trucks is able to produce that smooth tone without a pick and his slide bar is incredible! As stated before, Tedeschi is an amazing talent and not to be outdone as her vocals simply killed it on the gospel and soulful Joe Cocker song “Space Captain.”

Earlier this year it was announced that both Trucks and fellow guitarist Warren Haynes would be departing the Allman Brothers to focus in on their solo projects. With Trucks departing, fans of his solo band can savor what lies ahead and the endless possibilities for this band to further expand. Fans of the Allman’s, on the other hand, see what is soon to be a void they may never be able to recover from.
