“Comeblack” is the latest release from German rock legends, the Scorpions. This CD is not your typical greatest hits package. “Comeblack” is a tribute for both diehard Scorpions fans that supported them through the years and the legendary bands that inspired them to create music.
The Scorpions went back into the studio to re-record some of their classic hits as well as an interesting array of cover tunes. The arrangements of tunes like “Rock You Like A Hurricane,” “Still Loving You,” and “The Zoo” are only slightly different but the production is where you can really hear the changes. Klaus Meine’s vocals are much clearer and everything sounds sleeker. To me it sounds a bit overproduced and I prefer the earlier versions of the songs.
The second half of “Comeblack” is where the Scorpions shine. Klaus and company tackle classics like “All Day and All of the Night” by the Kinks as well as the Stones’ “Ruby Tuesday” in true Scorpions’ style. Stand out tracks are the old T-Rex song “Children of the Revolution” and a surprising version of the eighties pop hit “Tainted Love.”
“Comeblack” is an interesting listen but not much more and left me longing for some new material. Only time will tell if the Scorpions will indeed make a comeback. Until then, I’ll have to continue dusting off my copy of “Love at First Sting.”
