Youthful fans hit CMAC where the emerging visionary DJ Skrillex had the bass blasting with his self-proclaimed sound of dubstep, electro and glitch on this past Monday night. His entrance to his performance was grand for the Mothership Tour 2014. The lights went dark, the crowd screams, phones begin to illuminate the floor all while recording the excitement. Everyone is watching and waiting, looking at the gigantic alien face that is lit up on the stage waiting for it to unveil Skrillex and the stage behind it.

Music is pounding and everyone is starting to move and get ready for the night to begin. ‘Try It Out’ is thumping as the digital timers to each side of the stage are counting down the last five minutes before the cloth drops. As the cloth comes down it reveals a neon outlined lit space ship that has alien faces spray painted and graffiti all over it. Pyros go off in synch with huge blasts of smoke shooting up and outward from the stage and that gets everyone fully pumped with energy. You then see him on the spaceship. Streams of lights start flashing around the stage to give a nice light show for the fans all in the first few minutes of the show. It was a powerful start and it continued through the 90 minutes he was on stage.

The neon covered fans jumped up and down in approval of this young pioneer and his efforts to entertain. Fans seemed to show appreciation by being his “little aliens” as he referred to them during the evening by being freaky.

From the clothes they were wearing, to dancing, bumping, and grinding they all were connected for a moment to hear that bass drop. The show was filled with energy and you couldn’t help but move the entire night, as the music was pulsating through your body.

The performer had interacted with his “aliens” from the front row inside the shell all the way to the lawn where fans were crammed to the fence to try and get as close as they could to see the show. It was apparent the fans were all dressed up for a rave. It was comparable to being on the set of the movie ‘Sixteen Candles’ in the 80s but with a few more twists to it. Flower child meets disco queen and for the guys it was combination of jock meets retro prep after both have being “relaxed into a hippie that can drop the bass down low.”

There were movie/video snips that interchanged faces between alien faces and those of well known actors, kind of like Ghostbusters. If you couldn’t see up close the lights were enough to keep you entertained but for this crowd and his “aliens” I think they just needed to be with other “aliens” all doing the same thing. Having a blast.
