Canada’s own Lee Aaron, or as some know her , “The Metal Queen” is back and doing a few sporadic shows. BackstageAxxess was able to catch her on the 2nd night of a back- to- back at both Rockpiles in the greater Toronto area. Aaron took the stage around 11pm and played an hour and 20 minute set consisting of mostly her rock related material. Aaron also left the rock scene to pursue her love of jazz. She did incorporate one of those numbers titled “I’d Love To” to little reaction.
The people in attendance were there to see her rock out and Aaron did just that. Her band included Four by Fate veteran guitar player Sean Kelly which brought an extra zest to her show. Aaron was very personable throughout as she even wore someone’s hat during “Baby Go Round.” She talked about how the song “Some Girls Do” was written. “It was a song really about chasing a bad boy on a bike back in the late 1980’s,” remarked Aaron.
Aaron also gave her all on hits “Metal Queen” and “Whatcha’ Do to My Body.” I was especially impressed by her performance of the Montrose cover “Rock Candy,” which was a staple of her early shows. To give local flavor to the show, Aaron donned an old retro starter jacket of the Toronto Blue Jays during “Handcuffed to a Fence.”
I’m glad I got to see Aaron as she doesn’t do many shows. I think she should reach out to M3 or a festival like that so she can play to a broader audience.
