A brand new band out of Nashville Tennessee is starting to garner some serious attention. The Cadillac Three made its way through the WNY area this past Friday. The show was originally slated for Howdy’s concert venue but was moved to a more central location, The Waiting Room. The Cadillac Three consists of Jaren Johnston on guitar and vocals, Neil Mason on drums and Kelby Ray on bass guitar, Dobro and acoustic guitar. The band played this last show before heading overseas to the UK.
The band took the stage at approx. 10pm and kicked into their 2014 single “Party Like You.” They primarily played tracks off their debut disc “Tennessee Mojo.” In fact, 9 tracks were played off the disc. The band, led by the charismatic Jaren Johnston also dipped into other avenues for their setlist. Johnston, who is starting to become a very influential songwriter in the Nashville area, played a song he wrote for Tim McGraw called “Meanwhile Back at Mommas.” The song went to number 2 on the country music chart but the band really made it sound like their own when they played it live.
Johnston told stories in between some tracks including his recent few days off when he went sledding with a few chickens and a dog. “Unfortunately one of the chickens didn’t make it,” quipped Johnston. “I really loved that chicken.” Yes an odd story but it did fit right into what The Cadillac Three brought to the table. Mason played standing quite a bit which gave a different element to the same ole style of most drummers.
The Cadillac Three is about as down to earth country as you can get. This was my first time taking them in and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed them. I guess if someone asked me what you would compare them to, I would say if you threw Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Hank Williams Jr. into a blender, you would get a taste of what Cadillac Three is about. Not too bad of a recipe if you ask me!
