Monster Truck @ Waiting Room, Buffalo, New York 8-15-2013

I read about Monster Truck some months ago and they sounded like they might be ok … but when they hit the stage at Waiting Room in Buffalo, NY on Friday August 16, 2013, I was instantly impressed with their sound and energy. Imagine if Deep Purple and Soundgarden had a baby and that baby grew over the years and turned into a really cool person who indulged in some various recreations and found their own style along the way and you’ll begin to understand how good this band really is. Opening the show was Handsome Jack, a local band made up of musicians from various parts of the area; all of them seasoned musicians in their own rights and together they provided the perfect flow to get the crowd pumped. Go see these guys, you won’t be disappointed.

Then it was time for Hamilton, Ontario’s Monster Truck. The band came out and did their own sound check ensuring all their equipment was in order. The slight buzz surrounding them was hardly necessary considering the fury that they brought.

The band consists of bassist Jon Harvey, guitarist Jeremy Wilderman, Brandon Bliss on keys and drummer Steve Kiely. They played an awesome set of songs with high-octane energy and powerful musicianship from both of their EP’s, as well as others, and really blew the roof off the place. They have a huge sound and great riffs. They played album tracks “Sweet Mountain River” and “The Giant” to a small but dedicated crowd. The slow ballad “For the Sun” was the only breather of the set. Going out with a bang, they played “Seven Sea Blues” and “Righteous Smoke” back to back before returning for a 2 song encore, “Love Attack” and “Runnin’.”

Go see this band, get their CD’s. If you like true high energy, solid, get-down, hard driving rock and roll, this band is for you.
