Oh what the hell…
There’s this band. They’re called “Jackyl” and it’s been more than 20 years since they shot out of Georgia with their wild, untamed approach to rock-n-roll. Equal parts hard rock, heavy metal, and Southern rock. Now, I’ve never seen Jackyl live before, but talking to those who were in attendance at Braun’s Concert Cove on Saturday July 27, 2013, who have seen the show, they pretty much knew what to expect. So the Jackyl check list (because they didn’t play with a set list) would look something like this…
Attitude – check.
Whiskey on stage – check.
Loud guitars – double check.
Jesse James kickin’ ass – check.
References to the male anatomy – check.
Yeah, this show had a little something to fire-up the outlaw in all of us!! Greeted with a huge roar from the near capacity crowd as Jackyl took the stage, front man and founder Jesse James Dupree said that they have not played around this area in a while and it was about time to reconnect with his fans here, telling the crowd that Braun’s would soon be renamed “Jackyl’s Bar-n-Grill!” How can you not love these guys? Dupree seems like he could handle a Jackyl show pretty much single handedly if he wanted to. In between shots, he played a better than average lead guitar on some of the older Jackyl songs like “Down on Me” and “I Stand Alone.” This show seemed heavy on material from their early days and Jesse seemed proud to give the crowd what they wanted.
The band was solid. Chris Worley on drums, his brother Jeff Worley on guitar and the band is rounded out by Roman Glick on bass. They do their best to keep up with Jesse and his endless amounts of energy on stage. He is one of the most upbeat, up tempo, high energy and intense front men you will ever see on stage. Jesse roams around the stage like the wild man he truly is. This is a very cool thing to see on today’s music scene. Songs like “Push Comes To Shove”, “My Moonshine Kicks Your Cocaine’s Ass” and “Just Like A Devil” kept the night at a very high energy pace and moving so fast that before you knew it, we were to the encore. The musicianship in this band is second to none, they could easily become one of your favorite bands. With a “raw power” and true heart felt, straight from deep inside your rock and roll inner being that pervades every single song, how can they not be great? “Best In Show” indeed.
