During our interview prior to the show, Sevendust’s drummer Morgan Rose highly recommended checking out the opening band – Avatar. He described the lead singer as King Diamond meets Clockwork Orange. That was a perfect description of the Swedish death metal band. Avatar immediately got the fists pumping in the air as they thrashed around on stage. The lead singer held his cane in the air commanding his heavy metal army, “I heard this is supposed be the home of country music? Do you like country music? Scream if you like heavy metal!” The people ate this up for the short half hour the band was on stage.

Lacuna Coil delivered an hour long set of Italian gothic metal, showcasing songs from their newest release Dark Adrenaline. The vocals of Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro kept the crowd captivated with their Evanescence like sound. The songs were simply structured, but Cristina and Andrea kept you entertained as they prowled the stage like panthers.

Sevendust needed no introduction. As soon as the onlookers saw Morgan take to his drums, the venue erupted with screams! This was my first time attending a show at Marathon Works and the acoustics were a bit challenging. Sevendust usually has their volume cranked to eleven, so I’m sure that didn’t help. They opened the set with their first single “Decay” off of the upcoming release ‘Blackout the Sun.’ They attacked the stage with their renowned energy, led by Lajon at the front of the stage. As always, I was instantly mesmerized by Morgan Rose behind his newly designed drum kit. He was a spectacle to watch…hands down, one of the best players and showman behind the drums. Rose pounded the drums with the same force he had 18 years ago. The band’s attack never diminished throughout the night. My highlight was when Lajon introduced my favorite song “Angel’s Son.” He started off by reminding everyone that he was from Nashville, and thanked the fans for being there all those years. “It was like we grew up together,” said Lajon. He dedicated the song to anyone that we’ve lost through the years. The band might be getting older, but as of right now, they don’t show any signs of slowing down. Another great show by the boys from Atlanta.
