For those of us who grew up in the 80’s, it seems hard to believe that Night Ranger has been rocking America for over 35 years. Yet, here we are in 2017 and the band that brought us such classic hard rock hits as “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me” and “When You Close Your Eyes” is back with their 12th studio album “Don’t Let Up.” The title is a fitting one because after just one listen it’s clear that Night Ranger has done anything but with one of their hardest rocking records in years.
The opening track and first single “Somehow, Someway” kicks things off with the big, dual guitars of Brad Gillis and newcomer Keri Kelli in true Night Ranger fashion. Another great riff follows with “Running Out of Time” and I am happy to hear the band rocking harder than ever. Of course Night Ranger is also known for great melodies and this record provides those in spades with giant hooks and sing along choruses most notably on the title track “Don’t Let Up,” a classic radio rocker, perfect to sing along with in your car. The vocals of bassist Jack Blades and drummer Kelly Keagy are in top form as they both take turns on lead throughout the record. Don’t miss the laidback feel of “We Can Work It Out” and my personal favorite, the twangy guitars and barroom boogie of “(Won’t Be Your) Fool Again.”
It would be easy at this point in their career for Night Ranger to sit back and rest on their laurels. The fact that they refuse to do so and continue to create new, relevant music is a testament to the talent that lies within and their true love for their craft. Don’t hesitate on this one. “Don’t Let Up” is a must have for your collection.
