Power metal behemoth Kamelot delves deep into the human psyche with their latest release “The Shadow Theory.” The new record takes a dystopian look into the inner workings of the human mind and how it functions in an oppressive society. Fascinated by the work of psychologist Carl Jung, the band’s focus is on the 3 pillars known as The Shadow Empire (The Global Mind), The Shadow Key (The Resistance), and The Shadow Wall (The veil that blinds us from the truth.)
The subject matter provides a dark and eerie backdrop for thirteen new songs of symphonic metal mastery. Produced by Sascha Paeth (Avantasia) and mastered by Jacob Hansen (Volbeat), the album has a very theatrical almost cinematic feel to it as it kicks off with the introductory track “The Mission.” The record is an outstanding mix of smoldering guitars, glorious keyboards, and commanding vocal performances. Guitarist Thomas Youngblood’s skills are on full display as he turns up the passion and intensity on “Burns To Embrace” and “Kevlar Skin.” Vocalist Tommy Karevik has never sounded better and blends beautifully with guest vocalist Lauren Hart on “Phanton Divine(Shadow Empire)” and “Mindfall Remedy.” “In Twilight Hours” opens with exquisite piano and vocals from Karevik slowly adding lush orchestral elements before building to a heightened intensity as guest vocalist Jennifer Haben adds her soaring voice to the mix. Another magnificent track is “The Proud and The Broken” which is a showcase for the poignant piano and marvelous keyboard work of Oliver Palotai. Closing out the album in fine fashion is the epic instrumental “Ministerium (Shadow Key).”
