The Outlaws and Renegades Tour made its way through Central, NY this past Saturday to a very eager crowd that wanted to hear various forms of country music. The bands supplying the various forms of country music for this tour are Travis Tritt, The Charlie Daniels Band and Cadillac 3. The show started promptly at 7pm with Nashville’s own Cadillac 3 taking the stage.
Cadillac 3’s six song set really hit home as the trio, in which I feel really made a connection to the Weedsport crowd. Guitarist and vocalist Jaren Johnston, drummer Neil Mason and lap-steel player Kelby Ray played their brand of country blues and played it to perfection. Songs like “Party Like You” and “White Lightening” shows not only what great performers the young trio are but what great songwriters they are as well. They were a perfect appetizer for what was coming up for the rest of the evening.
Up next was the Charlie Daniels Band. At 84 years young, there isn’t anything that Mr. Daniels hasn’t seen or done. I have seen him now perform over the last 10 years a handful of times and I may dare to say, this maybe was the best performance I have seen yet! His voice remains true to form and his playing still is spot on (that’s both on the fiddle and on his guitar). Daniels went back and forth playing both the fiddle and the guitar but have to say, that with this show, he spent more time with that guitar. He also extended out some of the songs more so than he has in the past. When Daniels was playing his fiddle though, he even tossed out a few bow’s out to some lucky fans in the front row throughout the show. Not only was Daniels on, his band really sounded tight. The 11 song set started with “Drinkin’ my Baby Goodbye” (From 1985’s album “Me and The Boys”) and ended with the tune he is most well-known for, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”
The headliner Travis Tritt took the stage around 9:40pm to a rousing applause. I think Tritt was just as excited to see them as well. His smiles didn’t let up throughout the performance. He kicked things off with one of his first most well known tracks in “Put Some Drive in Your Country,” which was of his first full length LP release “Country Club” back in 1990. Tritt also still has a strong set of pipes and had a great band backing him as well. There is no mistake though, as his band was set back behind the drum kit for the most part. It was clear that this was Tritt’s stage and his only. He worked just about every bit of it throughout the show. He switched things up a bit as he enjoyed the solo spotlight as it was just him and his acoustic guitar on “Country State of Mind.” Before diving into some of his more popular tracks like “Here’s a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares)” and “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde,” Tritt ended his set with 4 outstanding covers.
Overall, it was a great triple bill of country brought in by Back 2 Back Entertainment. You can tell the area loves its country and already are looking forward to the next time that the fans can experience something like this again!
