Jackyl ‘Best in Show’

Sometimes in life you just need to kick back, get loud and nasty, and have a good time. What better band to provide the soundtrack for that than Jackyl? Their recent studio release, “Best In Show,” is working man’s rock and roll at its best. They are loud and lewd and make no apologies for it.

The record kicks off in high gear with the title track, “Best In Show.” Jeff Worley’s guitar is blazing and Jesse James Dupree can wail with the best of them. Backed with the precision rhythm section of Roman Glick on bass and Chris Worley on drums, Jackyl sounds as tight and polished as ever cranking it up on “Horns Up” and “Screw Driver.” Their bluesy roots shine on “Walk My Mile” and the slower pace of the ballad, “Don’t Lay Down on Me” is a welcome change. Of course, this wouldn’t be a Jackyl record without a song rife with crude humor and sexual innuendo and so we have the soon to be Jackyl classic, “Better Than Chicken.” It’s a fun, rocking song and with lyrics that scream “I like poontang better than chicken, I like laughing better than bitching,” live audiences will absolutely love it.

My favorite track without a doubt is Jackyl’s cover of Shel Silverstein’s “Cover of the Rolling Stone.” This version includes a Jesse James Dupree chainsaw solo along with a “We Will Rock You” drum section making it uniquely Jackyl. Also included is a bonus, hidden track of the Run-DMC classic “It’s Tricky.”

Jackyl’s music has always been pretty straight forward. They won’t bore you with political ideals or cryptic messages. Instead, they give you what they do best, balls to the wall hard rock and a whole lot of fun. So if you like your rock and roll loud with a little bit of southern and a whole lot of dirty, “Best In Show” is for you.
