Chris Salewicz (Paul McCartney Biographer) Interview

In anticipation of the upcoming reissues from Paul McCartney’s Wings Over America tour in 1976 that spawned an album and the film “Rockshow,” Backstage Axxess talked to a legendary music writer, Chris Salewicz, who wrote the definitive Paul McCartney biography.

The “Wings Over America” album was unique at the time because it was a three album set containing around two hours of music including a few tracks from Paul McCartney’s days in The Beatles. Unlike McCartney’s shows in recent years, The Beatles material was sparse and in turn, the set Wings play reflects the arena rock era.

The group McCartney assembled was nothing short of spectacular: Denny Laine (who sang lead on five tracks) and Jimmy McCulloch on guitar, Joe English on drums and Linda McCartney on keyboards and background vocals.

Nearly forty years since the tour, Salewicz shared his thoughts and recollections from the experience. While that alone would provide excellent fodder for an entire interview, Salewicz is also an expert on The Clash and Bob Marley. We took time to discuss them as well.
