By combining the distinct sounds of metalcore with pop-punk, the Florida rockers A Day To Remember have created a signature style that has earned them a loyal legion of fans. For their latest and fifth album “Common Courtesy” they have stuck with the formula that has given them such success and have stayed true to their original sound.
The record opens with the words ‘Fuck Yeah’ before turning into the poppier sounds of “City of Ocala” which has the band paying homage to their hometown. This theme continues throughout the album with moments of blistering metalcore giving way to punky pop choruses. My personal preference are the songs with a heavier feel like the angry “Sometimes You’re the Hammer, Sometimes You’re the Nail” and “Dead & Buried” which features a not to be missed breakdown midway through. Those that prefer the softer side will appreciate the slow groove of “I’m Already Gone” and the ballad “I Surrender.” “Best of Me” and “Life @ 11” are true arena anthems that will no doubt be huge. McKinnon’s vocals have never sounded better and the band is as tight as ever with the bass of Joshua Woodard being a standout.
“Common Courtesy” is classic A Day To Remember. They combine the best of two genres that they love and make no apologies for it. And you know what? It works.
