Love them or hate them, the rock band Jackyl has always been synonymous with a great rock show. This past Friday night at Braun’s Concert Cove in Akron, NY, was no exception. The boys who call the Full Throttle Saloon their second home, made the Cove feel like home during their performance.
Speaking of the Full Throttle Saloon, the band just played their days earlier, so they were in rare form to let loose a little and did just that. Jackyl still remains a four (4) piece unit consisting of Jesse James Dupree, the Worley brothers Chris on drums and Jeff on guitar, and bassist Roman Glick. Led by the funny and charismatic front man Dupree, the band delivered a kick ass rock show that lasted about an hour and half.
Dupree took the stage and was all smiles as the band went into “My Moonshine Kicks Your Cocaine’s Ass.” Dupree went on to talk about the venue’s recent troubles with its neighbors and the noise ordinances, encouraging people to stand up and help businesses like Braun’s in your local communities. He then proceeded to call the bar “Jackyl’s Bar and Grill!”
Dupree made the crowd feel at home. He didn’t talk about his brand name Jesse James Outlaw Bourbon Whiskey ,but he didn’t have to. He took swigs and passed around the bottle all night to his bandmates. This enhanced the performance as he kept telling funny stories in between songs and some had his bandmates rolling the laughter as well. Dupree also interjected Chuck Berry’s “My Ding-A-Ling” and the Hee Haw theme into the set.
The Worley brothers have been with Dupree and know what to expect from their sometimes unpredictable front man. What’s a Jackyl show without a little love from a tree hating instrument? Yes, Dupree made the chain saw a part of rock and roll culture when the band first broke onto the scene over 20 years ago. Besides the chain saw solo, Dupree also cut a wooden stool almost in half as he smashed the rest to bits.
Jackyl can be defined as a rowdy, beer drinking, good time and kick ass rock and roll band. That’s pretty much what you will get with a chain saw thrown in for good measure.
