Smokey Robinson ‘Smokey & Friends’

With his silky smooth voice and signature falsetto, Smokey Robinson is a true rhythm and blues legend. Whether recording and performing with The Miracles or later in his solo career, Robinson has consistently churned out hit after soulful hit. He is also a true songwriting talent penning classic Motown hits for other artists like The Temptations. His most recent release is an album of duets, “Smokey & Friends,” with various guest artists performing some of his biggest songs.

At first I was a bit skeptical because the original versions of these songs are such classics it would be hard to improve upon them. After the first track, “The Tracks of My Tears,” where Robinson partners with Elton John, I was won over. At 74, Smokey’s vocals are still spot on and the contrast between him and Elton was amazing. Throughout the record, Robinson allows the guests to really put their own spin on things bringing a unique and often different feel to these Motown standards. You won’t want to miss the vocal stylings of Steven Tyler on “You Really Got a Hold On Me” and the laidback swing of James Taylor on “Ain’t That Peculiar.” Produced by Randy Jackson, the entire album has a contemporary yet timeless feel.

Although the original versions will always be nearest and dearest to my heart, “Smokey & Friends,” is well done. The record shines a new light on some of the biggest hits ever and is well worth a listen.
