The Struts @ Canalside Buffalo, NY 7-25-19

Maybe the best double bill of the summer took place this past Thursday at Canalside in Buffalo. Canada’s own The Glorious Sons and The Struts matched up to give a the huge crowd a memorable night of rock n roll.

Taking the stage first was The Glorious Sons. Many made the trek over the border to see them. The band has been building quite a reputation over the last year or so. Last month they opened for the only date that the Rolling Stones played in Canada. So there has been lot of buzz lately with them. There were tons of people with The Glorious Sons t-shirts throughout the audience. The band took the stage at 6:45pm sharp with lead singer Brett Emmons standing at the front of the stage, waiting for the crowd to erupt. As the crowd began reaching fever pitch, then the band broke into “Ruby.” They maintained that excitement the entire show. Brett Emmons made his presence felt form right the beginning. He was intense and even hopped into the pit to sing with various fans a few times throughout the set. The band are getting ready to release a new record in September called “A War on Everything.” What is already becoming one of their classics is a single from the upcoming record called “S.O.S (Sawed Off Shotgun.)”   A dynamic set that showed the fans that is about to become sooner than later.

The band that everyone is looking at to lead rock into the next generation is UK”s The Struts. Led by the ever charismatic front man Luke  Spiller, the band played, dances and sang their way through a fun set. Guitarist Adam Slack played superbly all night. He never overplayed as he let Spiller do his thing but really  provided amazing tone the entire night. The catchy riffs of Slack coincided with a solid foundation provided by both bassist Jed Elliott and drummer Gethin Davies. Songs like  “Body Talk” and “Dirty Sexy Money”  really got the crowd involved and kept that participation the entire night. Spiller jumped behind the piano a few time throughout the performance. The one tune that had everyone singing along as “One Night Only.”  Make no mistake. Spiller was front and center and if you had to describe him I would say…. If you put Freddie Mercury and Mick Jagger in a blender, you would get Spiller. His energy was consistent throughout the show.

I believe both The Struts and Glorious Sons made their marks on Buffalo, NY with this memorable performance. The rest of the summer schedules around the Western New York are have a lot to live up to for the rest of the 2019 summer concert season.
