With two hit singles and videos in heavy rotation on MTV, Enuff Z’nuff’s 1989 self-titled debut album rocketed them to the top of the charts. Their unique blend of pop rock melodies made songs like “New Thing” and “Fly High Michelle” wildly popular. Unfortunately, the glam rock and hair metal era would give way to a new generation of grunge and the band would not see this level of success again. It’s been over 30 years and there have been some major lineup changes but Enuff Z’nuff is still going strong and has recently released a brand new album, “Diamond Boy.”
The new record is the band’s first release of new material without contributions from former lead vocalist and co-songwriter Donnie Vie. This time out founding member, bassist Chip Z’nuff, would tackle not only all the songwriting duties but handle all lead vocals for the first time as well. This would be a daunting task for many but after one listen to “Diamond Boy” it is clear that Chip was up for the challenge. The album kicks off with an ethereal intro track “Transcendence” which leads into the title track. “Diamond Boy” is a phenomenal tune with a catchy rhythm and a hook that will knock you out of your seat. Chip’s vocals sound amazing and the songs really hold true to the classic Enuff Z’nuff sound without seeming dated. Joining Chip is guitarist Tory Stoffregen who does does some exceptional melodic guitar leads and really drives it home on the lead single “Metalheart.” Guitarist Tony Fennell and drummer Daniel Benjamin Hill round out the lineup and they both seem to be a good fit for the band. Don’t miss the slower paced, bluesy feel of “Love Is On The Line” which is a real standout track.
Enuff Z’nuff has always been masterful at the art of melody and this entire album is proof that they haven’t lost a step. With solid songs and outstanding performances, “Diamond Boy” could be the start of a whole new era for Enuff Z’nuff. Here’s hoping they fly high again.
